The First Line On Your About Page Matters More Than You Think - Part 2 of 5

Typesetting letter tray with the word ABOUT laying on top

I once clicked through to a new entrepreneur’s website from Instagram. Her posts were sharp and specific, so I was curious.

Her About page started with:

“I’ve always been passionate about helping people and I believe everyone deserves to live their best life.”

I still had no idea:

  • What she actually did
  • Who she worked with
  • Whether she was a coach, designer, consultant, or something else

So I clicked away.

This happens all the time. Not because you’re not good at what you do, but because your first line isn’t doing its job.

What your first line should do

Your opener doesn’t need to be dramatic. It just needs to be clear.

A simple structure that works:

“I help [who you help] [specific result] through [your main service/offer].”

Examples:

  • “I help new online service providers book consistent clients through simple, search‑friendly marketing.”
  • “I help first‑time course creators launch their first profitable course with a clear plan and support.”
  • “I help local business owners get found online through done‑for‑you SEO and content.”

This one line tells both people and search engines:

  • Who you’re for
  • What you help with
  • How you do it

A quick first‑line makeover

Take a look at your current About page and ask:

  • Does my first line clearly say what I do and who I help?
  • Would a complete stranger understand what I offer from this sentence alone?

If not, rewrite your first 1–2 sentences using the format above.

That small change alone can:

  • Reduce confusion
  • Keep the right people reading longer
  • Send clearer signals to search engines about what you’re about
