So stay tuned. The fun starts now. Welcome to the SEO Day podcast. I'm the official mail bag keeper around here, Kim White, and I am in the studio today with the incredibly brilliant Denise Millet, the Findability queen herself. Denise, thank you for answering all the many questions in the mailbag that we get from across the globe, honestly, that entrepreneurs and business owners have about the very intimidating, sometimes three letters.
SEO. Thank you, Kim. Thank you for being here with me today, as always being my uh, mailbag keeper. I'd be lost without you. Aw. Thank you, Denise. Well, I have to tell you, I have been carrying in my pocket all week long a letter from your friend Nancy, who is an eBay seller, and we couldn't get all our questions answered last episode.
So we are back today to continue that conversation about online auction, SEO kind of things. How's that? Perfect. So we are continuing the conversations and she asked another really great question, and that is, Where can I find keywords for my eBay items? You're right about this one. This is a good one.
It's actually similar to what I tell people to find keywords for search engines. Is go to the actual search engine. So search in eBay, the sold listings first, because those are actual sales. So in the filter on the advanced search, you can select just sold listings and you can see what actually sold.
Look at those listings and say, well, what was in the title? What was in the description? Because that made a connection with a real person. So that's better priority. And then research the current listings, see what the current things are that are out there. Look at the listings and, and see how well they're written in the titles and the descriptions.
And that'll give you some ideas. Well, I wanna encourage anyone who didn't listen to the last episode to go back and check out episode 13, because there are more answers to this similar questions. But Nancy's next question is, what's important in an eBay title for an item? This is a good one. So eBay recommends that you put in NEW you know, if it's a new item.
New is really important because some people always search for new. Put in the brand, the name of the product in pe, what people are gonna use if there's a model number. Uh, describe it, size, color, the things that people are gonna type to look for it. And, you know, you only have 80 characters, so you run outta characters fast, as you know, Kim.
But if you have room left, then you can put other things that you think they might use. But if you can get the brand and the name and, and new and model, that kind of thing, it's good. Well, I know you pointed out last week, Denise, that it was the eBay itself is a search engine all to itself, and I think that's a very important information when we're talking about these things.
Is it people are coming there in a different way than just the regular search engines. So this is actually very great information you're sharing. Okay. Nancy's next question today is, will it help to use all caps or asterisk or, um, I can't even think of what the exclamation points. I couldn't think of what an exclamation point was.
Exclamation points in my titles to catch someone's eye on eBay. No, no, no, no, no. Uh, eBay doesn't like that. They really don't. It's kind of like when somebody sends you a text in all caps that it's kind of like jarring. eBay doesn't like that approach at all. They think, um, they will lower your ranking on your listing and probably won't show it, basically.
And they, they're pretty clear about that. So, and plus you only have 80 characters, so you really shouldn't, should do all caps. I mean, it's one thing to put new in all caps, but to do all caps for a, a portion of it or just to catch the brand, they don't like it. So I wouldn't. Good to know. Well, let's head over to a word from our sponsor today, so we'll be back in less than a.
This episode is brought to you by the findability Queen Denise Millet. Visit her YouTube channel youtube.com/@findabilityqueen for her collection of short videos, answering questions about findability and SEO for entrepreneurs every day. We are back talking about online auctions, in particular eBay today, and I think this is another very great question in my listing.
Can I point to my other listings that I have on auction or in my store?
So this is a tricky one. You know how like on a webpage you can create a link to something and actually, so someone can click on it and just go to the other page that's so convenient on the internet. Right. I was used to linking and connecting on a listing. You can't do that. You can't actually create a clickable thing for someone to go to another listing.
It's not allowed and it'll, you know. Sting you for sure, and your listing won't get shown. What you can do is you can put words in there, say, look for my other listings, or I have other pieces to this collection available. But another thing that's good to know about eBay is you can have a store. Uh, I know you've had experience with that, and so it's, it's something you create where your listings get grouped under an umbrella, a title that you can refer people to your store, and then you have categories where you can have all those related things.
Show up together. So if you can point someone to your store, um, or tell them to go to your store, they could see more of your items in that category. And that's probably the safer way to go about talking about that in your description. Love it. Thank you Denise. And our last question for this episode is another eBay question, and it is, there are so many details on the eBay listings.
Now, do I really need to fill out all of the description and do I really need to fill it all out? Yes, yes. Um, you know, you have to think about this just like a, a search engine and a, and they're looking at your web pages and your reputation, and they're trying to decide if you're a good person to show to their customers.
Well, eBay's doing the same thing. They're looking at your listings and they're trying to compare you with the other people with similar listings as a seller and trying to decide if you're a real person, if you're a real business, if, if you care about what you're selling, if you're gonna treat your customers right, if you're going to have great transactions that don't result in refunds and problems and trouble, right?
So you filling out those things not only makes it easier for people to search for your items, because they might search by. Any of those details you choose, but it also demonstrates to eBay that you are a good seller and it, and it supports your reputation. It supports your, it's not just feedback that does that, it's actually how you perform on the platform and how you.
How you submit information to them and how trustworthy you are. So think of it as that proof that you're a trustworthy person, that you're actually taking that time. And trust me, I know it takes a lot of time. I know it's not the easiest thing to do when you really just wanna take a picture and put it up there with a couple of words in a title.
Sure. We all would like to do that. But if you think about yourself, if you're buying something, what do you wanna see? You wanna see as much as possible and keep that in the back of your mind. Thank you Denise, for answering all these questions and thank you Nancy for submitting so many. This has been an awesome letter that we can file away, Denise, 'cause they have been answered.
We're gonna close the mailbag for today and we'll jump back in next week. You did a great job, Denise, of making things clear for those who are online sellers online.
